Coins by Mint

Start from whoever strikes the coin. The GSG Encyclopedia groups series by mint or refinery, from state mints to private houses, so you can follow the work of a single house, its style, its finishes and its issue calendar.

What a mint is

The mint is the workshop that strikes the coin. It can be a state mint, such as the Royal Canadian Mint, the Royal Mint or Münze Österreich, or a private house or refinery that strikes to order.

Why it matters

Each mint has its own technique, its own quality control and its own finishes. For many collectors, the mint matters as much as the theme. It is also the detail that best helps to spot a replica.

Mint and issuing country

A mint can strike for another country. That is why the entry shows the two separately. If you prefer to start from the issuing authority, use By Issuing Country.

Releases

Mints announce their issues in advance. In New Listings you see the latest announced, sorted by announcement date.

Mint mark

Many mints engrave their own mark on the coin, the mint mark, which identifies its origin. In the A to Z Glossary you will find the full definition.
